In mid-July, Howard Nam, MD, an otolaryngologist at Sutter North Surgery and Endoscopy Center in Yuba City, California, implanted an upper airway stimulator in a patient’s chest. This was the first time Nam had completed the procedure in the ASC. The device, which is controlled by the patient with a remote control, is designed to stimulate a nerve in the jaw that controls tongue movement and helps keep airways open during sleep.
