Updated Nondiscrimination Requirements Take Effect

Surgery centers must assign Section 1557 coordinators by November

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) issued a Section 1557 final rule (FR) recently that provides revised civil rights regulations ASCs must adhere to beginning July 5, 2024 (the rule’s effective date). Section 1557 is part of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) and prohibits “discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in certain health programs and activities.”
