ASC Community Suffers Tragic Loss

Ann Shimek, RN, CASC

Ann Shimek, RN, CASC, senior vice president and chief clinical officer at Surgery Partners, died on November 25. She was 54.

Shimek, a former ASCA Board Member, was the executive director of the ASC Quality Collaboration. She also served on the Technical Committee for the Ambulatory Surgery Center Quality Collaboration and the ASC Quality Collaboration Committee for Electronic Health Record for the ASC.

Shimek had worked in the healthcare industry for more than 30 years. She graduated summa cum laude from Wright State University with a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1988 and received her Master of Science in nursing with honors from Benedictine University in 2012. After graduating from Wright, Shimek worked as a nurse for eight years in various places in Texas and then became the clinical director of Dallas Day Surgery Center. After five years at the Dallas Day Surgery Center, she joined United Surgical Partners International and worked there in various positions for 16 years.

"Ann was a friend and a leader in the ASC community," says Bill Prentice, chief executive officer of ASCA. "Our thoughts are with her family as they deal with this immeasurable loss."
